Semur en auxois - Cote d'Or - Burgundy
Drive down the hill into Semur-en-Auxois on a beautiful day and you will discover the most awesome view of the rampart and the River Armançon. You will discover a very picturesque medieval town with attractive houses, antique dorways, old porches and narrow streets.
The magnificent fortress looks onto the pretty valley of the River Armançon with its weeping willows and weirs. Often you will see artists sketching the citadel, many painters come to Semur and love painting on the river banks and catch the glimpse of this quiet river l'Armançon. By night, the gigantic towers and ramparts are softly illuminated to create a spectacle all of their own.
Go over the Pont Joly, past the Tour de l'Orle-d'Or with its vulnerable fractured side, and up the cobbled street into town. Walk through the Porte Guillier, a medieval gateway, and enjoy the street cafes and shops along the pedestrian street. The chocolate maker Bruno Coeur has his pâtissierie Les Semurettes at no. 14 and here you can purchase Gâteau Mont-Auxois, a local treat. Monsieur Coeur participated in the making of the film Chocolat supplying many of the ancient tools of the trade. The Charcuterie Notre-Dame on the square has mouth watering delicatessen, and the restaurant-pizzeria L'Entr'act and many others give this quarter a very lively atmosphere.
The town is built on a pink granite spur and from the rampart walk, you will discover an awesome view of the river. The scenery is charming. Going down the road from the ramparts, you will pass former mills and tanneries and at the bottom of the valley by the Pont des Minimes, there is an authentic bistro Maison Dieu, Les Minimes. In my childhood, it used to be a bakery and I can remember going there to bring the Xmas turkey to be cooked.
Opposite this restaurant, you will see the ancient Convent Minimes
On the left along the river, you will be able to access walking path leading to woods and you will discover the most beautiful secret passages with incredible views of the town.
The town has many facilities such as a hospital, doctors, chemists, ATM's, 3 supermarkets and will make a short stay very comfortable.
May is the month for celebration in Semur-en-Auxois with a Medieval festival in the middle of the month and the Course de la Bague, the oldest horse race in France dating back to 1639, with a great street market on the 31st of the month each year.

Guédelon is a journey back in time. A genuine building site. We do not programme demonstrations at set times. The order in which work takes place on the site is determined by the real demands of the construction process itself. Each task, each piece of work is undertaken strictly according to what needs to be done on site at a given momentExplore the site to the sound of metal on stone, the sawing of wood, horses' hooves on bare earth and the hammer striking the anvil - become totally immersed in the 13th Century. http://www.guedelon.fr/en/
